What is a Podcast? Introduction to Podcasting
 Introduction to Podcasting

How would you describe a podcast to someone who has never heard of the term before? What is a podcast?

That question was recently asked in a private Telegram Group by group member I’m a part of.

Not surprisingly, but very interestingly the answers varied a bit.

Podcasting is The greatest and latest sensation on the internet today! Anyone can have millions of listeners providing you an audience that was unattainable in the past!

The broadcast license is not required!

No censors to worry about!

There is no need to buy expensive equipment!

It's really very easy to achieve professional results nowadays in minutes!

Podcasting is a web radio. The files are obtained from the internet and are listened to offline.

With TIVO and alternative Digital Video Recorders available on the market for TV, Podcasting is the best answer for radio on demand.

You'll listen to your favorite programs on your schedule. If you wish to pause a show, you will pause that. If you wish to rewind or fast forward a podcast show, you can do it too.

It's programming that matches your needs!

Podcasting is not restricted to iPods.

You will listen to a Podcast on any device like a laptop or any smartphone. Your programming is limited solely by your imagination!

Podcasts can be entertainment for music, education, and comedy, or informational, to marketing or promote and sell a product or service.

Even though the way folks describe what a podcast is varied, the answers tend to overlap in the following areas:

Talk radio

I thought that this answer summed it up well:-

It is all of your favorite shows, blogs, and topics (some you did not even know you would enjoy!) wrapped up in a very vast hub of recordings (Google Podcasts, etc) that you just will explore, download and listen to on your own time.

At the work, In the car or at home or while exercising, anywhere. If you can search it on Google, there is probably a podcast about it!

The dictionary definition of a podcast is:

A digital audio file that is made available on the web for downloading to a computer or mobile and any other electronic device. It is usually available as a series, new installments of which may be received by subscribers automatically.

The term Podcast is truly a portmanteau of iPod and Broadcast.

Podcasting started as mainly an independent way for people to get their messages out there and create a community of individuals with similar interests.

That still exists.

However, nowadays there are podcasts from:

Radio networks (like NPR)

TV networks (BBC, CNN, Fox, ESPN, etc.)

New 'podcast-only' networks (Gimlet is a good example)

Standup Comedians

Storytellers (Lore comes to mind)

Churches (Red Rocks Church is amazing)

and a whole lot more…

There is not a pre-determined length, format, style, level of production, or anything else.

Podcasts may be broken up into “seasons” sort of a Television show (Serial is probably the foremost renowned example of this.

However, my new favorite is Business Wars by Wondery) and be episodic and ongoing.

A weekly release for brand new episodes is common.

However, there are daily podcasts and also weekly podcasts. And really any cadence (or lack thereof) the creator wishes.

Put simply, a podcast may be a series of episodes.

These episodes are audio files. They are seemingly stored with a podcast hosting company.

Another good thing regarding podcasts is that you just will subscribe to them.

It makes it simple and very easy to get notified (via your most favorite podcast app) once new episodes come out.

What is exciting regarding podcasting is that it's comparatively simple. And it is cheap to produce your own show.

And the quality and popularity of podcasts are growing by the day.

You do not need to dependant on radio stations for recording and broadcasting – and you can mention anything that interests you.

What is podcast used for:

good podcasts to listen to

Here are some other answers to the question of how do you describe a podcast:

Audio on demand.

Online on-demand pre-recorded talk radio show wherever you will notice somebody talking about most subjects under the sun.

Plenty of times the hosts (and guests) are general people sharing their experiences and expertise.

Radio on your phone.

Free, online talk-show on any topic you'll imagine.

It is the way to have audio content for a specific subject delivered to a device or tool. And it becomes easier to access.

It is a downloadable niche talk radio.

And a pre-recorded radio show that's basically on-demand but on a large number of platforms for consumption.

It is something that will either be vague and terribly specific in one’s interests.

It is like Netflix for audio.

Downloadable radio on each subject imaginable!

Audio entertainment at any place, anytime and about anything.

Audio discussions regarding any subject you'll think about and you'll listen to them anytime that works for you.

Downloadable talk radio – you ultimately opt for the topics that you just want to listen to.

On-demand audio recording targeted on a particular theme or story, typically updated frequently.

Audiobooks for blogs.

An audio version of a blog that you'll just listen to anyplace.

An audio show that you simply can not find on the traditional radio. And it serves as a distinct segment or as a niche.

That means very fascinating to you.

The equivalent of self-publishing your book.

It permits everyday folks with great concepts to publish their ideas or thoughts in an audio format.

And It gives great pleasure for others and while not having to go through conventional media like radio.
